Those who love to travel and are good at customer service may consider a career as a travel agent. Travel agents are always in demand in California as people wish to plan their dream vacations around the country and world. There are a number of schools in California that offer different training and certification for travel agents. There are a number of opportunities with different agencies across the state, as well.

Instructions

    1

Enroll in a travel agent certification program at one of California's universities, technical or vocational schools. Galileo Travel School, West Los Angeles and Los Medanos Community College Travel Program are three schools recommended by the American Society of Travel Agents. California State University also offers a program. Before enrolling, be sure that the time frame fits your schedule. Many schools offer online programs or classes that are flexible with your schedule while others are two- or four-year degree programs.

    2

Complete the program to receive your travel agent certification. Most programs include the fee and certification with your degree, but others may require you to file the paper work.

    3

Apply for jobs at an agency. Decide if a large or small agency is best for you. Applying while you are still in school is a good way to get your foot in the door. Even if you can only work as an assistant or a receptionist, this will give you experience in the industry. Travel agents in Santa Barbara, San Jose and Modesto earn the most money.

    4

Join the California chapter of the American Society of Travel Agents. This organization is a stepping stone where you can meet other individuals in your industry and receive members-only discounts.

    5

Educate yourself after completing your certification. Although to be a travel agent in California you only technically need a certification you want your business to grow, and this can be done through continuing education. Popular vacation destinations change over time and you want to stay ahead of trends. It is similar with computer programs and business techniques.
