How to Apply for Travel Documents

Travelers need to know the rules and requirements to get into different countries. Before you leave the country, get the necessary documentation. Each country requires something different from its visitors and/or future residents. The same steps however, can be applied to all countries when applying for documents.

Instructions

    1

Contact the embassy or consulate for the country you plan to visit to find out what documents you will need. Different entry requirements are needed for each country; in general, the first thing you need is a valid passport. Applications for passports and other documents are usually available both online and at the embassy or consulate.

    2

Make sure that you can fulfill all the requirements for the travel document you are applying for. Stipulations apply for some types of travel documents. For example, some working holiday visas have age requirements.

    3

Complete the forms for your destination country. Double-check all to make certain you haven't missed any valuable information to be read and filled in, which could delay your application. According to the U.S. Department of State website, some countries will require more documentation than others, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate and/or a passport-sized photo for visas.

    4

Submit your documentation to an agent at the consulate or embassy for processing. Be prepared to pay a fee.

    5

Contact the consulate to find out the progress of your application. Many consulates, for example, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, will allow you to check online for your application status. After a follow-up with the consulate or embassy, the only thing left to do is wait for your paperwork to come through.
