How to Avoid Parasites When Traveling

Travel, especially to developing countries, puts people at risk for parasites because of less strict or nonexistent regulations regarding food and water. Parasites can also invade travelers whose skin comes into contact with the creatures. Therefore, travelers have to be wary of what they eat and wear when they travel.

Instructions

    1

Pack socks and sneakers in your suitcase. Wear these whenever you go out walking in a questionable area. This will keep parasites on the ground from entering your body through your feet. Furthermore, wear gloves if you handle soil. Some parasites live in soil and can enter the body through the skin.

    2

Do not drink tap water, water from streams or water from reservoirs unless you are aware of strict local laws regarding drinking water. If there is no sealed bottled water available, bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking -- three minutes at altitudes higher than 6,562 feet. Be careful not to swallow water when swimming in non-chlorinated water.

    3

Wash your hands with soap and water before eating and after using the bathroom when traveling. Do not put your hands in your mouth for any reason until they are clean.

    4

Do not eat undercooked meat when traveling unless the source is trustworthy. Make sure that all food you ingest is fresh and the proper temperature. For example, do not eat a warm garden salad because it may have been warm all day, which allows parasites to grow.
