How to Become a Travel Agent in Minnesota

Travel agents provide travel services to businesses and individuals. Travel agents can be self-employed, or they can work for a small business, travel agency or a large corporation. Travel agents are in demand in Minnesota as elsewhere. If you live in Minnesota and want to begin a career as a travel agent, there is a process that you must undergo.

Instructions

    1

Work in an entry-level position at a travel agency. Working in a travel agency as a receptionist or reservations clerk is an excellent way to gain experience in the travel industry. Travel agencies can be found in both the Twin Cities and outstate Minnesota. A high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) is usually required for securing a position with a travel agency.

    2

Research further education opportunities. According to Education Portal, an associate's or bachelor's degree in travel agency management or hotel management will increase your chances of obtaining a travel agent position. If you already have a degree (in something else), a certificate in travel industry management could help you in your career.

    3

Determine in which environment you world like to work. Travel agent positions exist in a wide variety of environments. Decide whether you prefer to be self-employed, work for a travel agency, or work directly with a small business or large corporation.

    4

Apply for jobs or start your business. If you would rather be employed by an agency or business, then apply for travel agent positions. If you want to be a self-employed travel agent, then start a website, post advertisements, make business contacts and get started on your career.
