You love writing, and you're always looking for new opportunities to travel. So why not combine the two passions and become a travel journalist? Writing about the destinations you visit will help you recall the best memories of your trip, and it also will help you strengthen your writing skills.

Instructions

    1

Before you book your next flight, practice your writing as much as possible so you can start building up your portfolio. You'll most likely be sending articles to travel magazines for publication, so get comfortable with your writing so you can capture the sights and sounds of each location you visit. It also will help boost your confidence for when you're pitching ideas to travel publications.

    2

Even though your main focus will be writing about your recent summer escape to the rain forests of Brazil or your winter vacation to the snow-capped mountains of Aspen, capture your adventures on film. Travel journalists should have experience in photography, so shoot a lot of photos when you're vacationing. Take photos of the shades of red and orange that make up the sunset in an exotic location, and get some candid shots of your friends and family enjoying the surroundings. These types of photos will make your articles much more interesting and engaging.

    3

You probably won't make a substantial amount of money right away as a travel journalist; but as you become more well-known in the travel-writing community, you might land a gig that includes an expense budget. It's also a good idea to write about attractions and activities in your own city or state. You will avoid spending a ton of money, and you'll be able to give expert reviews about the area. Submit your piece to as many travel websites or magazines you think might publish the article, and include tips about restaurants and affordable hotels.
