How to Drain the Black Water Tank on a Travel Trailer

If you enjoy camping but don't enjoy the thought of not having a modern bathroom close at hand, having a travel trailer or RV with its own toilet can solve your problems. Of course, all the waste that goes into that toilet has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is the black water tank. A black water tank can create quite an odor when full or left to sit, so it's important to empty it every time you go camping. Fortunately, black water tanks are set up for fairly easy draining.

Instructions

    1

Close your gray water tank valve the night before you're going to flush the black water tank. This will allow you to flush the entire line with relatively clean water once the black water tank is emptied.

    2

Place the drain hose in a septic drain. Most campgrounds have dumping stations with a spot to place your drain hose.

    3

Open the valve on the black water tank and allow it to drain out. At the same time, run a water hose into your travel trailer, attach the spray wand and insert it down into the black water tank, effectively rinsing the tank of additional contaminants.

    4

Once drained, close the valve on the black water tank and open up the valve for the gray water tank. This will help in flushing and cleaning the hose.

    5

Close the valve on the gray water tank, detach the hose from the dump station and return it to its home next to the tank valves.
