The job outlook for travel agents is expected to decline slightly over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Easy-to-use Internet travel sites are to blame. However, some travelers still prefer the customer service and face-to-face interaction they receive from working with a local travel agent. Although you don't need a travel agent license to work as an agent, obtaining one will give you more credibility in the eyes of your customers.

Work in the travel industry before making the decision to become a licensed travel agent. Taking any position, such as a receptionist, will give you firsthand experience with the job and help you decide if you want to continue taking steps to become a licensed agent.
2Research and enroll in a travel agent licensing program. These programs are available online as well as at many local colleges (see the Resources section for a few examples).
3Secure a job as a travel agent. If you are still working for a travel agency, your completion of the travel agent licensing program will most likely allow you to get a job with your current agency if an opening exists. This also will allow you to gain important on-the-job training--invaluable for finding success with a travel agency.
4Contact the state in which you live to register as a licensed travel agent.
