Buying your own travel hula-hoop can be expensive, often costing between $30 and $40. However, making your own collapsible hoop can cost under $5. Constructing a hula-hoop is a quick process that involves simple supplies. Making a collapsible hoop requires more patience and is slightly more difficult than making a regular hula-hoop. Collapsible hoops are more practical if you want to take your hula-hoop with you to the park or to a group gathering and have to rely on public transportation.

Instructions

    1

Measure off a piece of poly tubing in your desired size. Hula hoops should generally stand up to your navel or chest. Cut to the desired length with a pair of PVC cutters.

    2

Make three more cuts to make four even quarters. Make scratch marks across each cut to know how the pieces should fit back together.

    3

Sand the ribbed ends of each of the four insert connectors until they are able to fit easily into the tubing. They should fit snugly, but able to be pulled out with a little force.

    4

Heat the end of each of the four tubes with a blow dryer. Slide the non-sanded ends of the connectors into each of the tubes, up to the halfway point, leaving the sanded ends sticking out.

    5

Prepare a piece of coat hanger wire and use it to thread the bungee cord through the four pieces of tubing. Thread the bungee cord around until it comes out at the other end of the hoop.

    6

Stretch the cord taut and overlap both ends. Wrap the wire tightly around the cord. Squeeze the wire into the cord with pliers. If done properly, the hoop should be able to collapse into four parallel arcs.

    7

Wrap colorful candy cane stripes around the tubing with decorative tape. You can experiment with crisscrossing different colors and patterns.
