How to Pack for Airplane Travel

You can make traveling by air more enjoyable by planning out the contents of your suitcase in advance to ensure that you have a stress-free journey. When you fly, it is important to ensure you have all the items you need at the airport, during the flight and at your destination. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), it is also important that you pack your luggage yourself since you will be held responsible for all items in your bags.

Instructions

    1

Write a list of the items you need when you reach your destination including clothing, toiletries, a towel and an electrical adapter plug if you are leaving the country. Check weather predictions for your destination before traveling so you can pack appropriately.

Research the destination country's regulations concerning incoming traveler's luggage. According to Lonely Planet, some countries prohibit or charge a fee to bring in particular items such as food, electrical equipment or designer products.

    2

Pack as lightly as possible as you are more likely spend less time waiting for your case when you arrive at your final destination. You will also have more spare room in your suitcase to bring back souvenirs if you're going on vacation. Choose a lightweight suitcase to reduce the overall weight of your luggage.

    3

Take enough medication to see you through your trip. If you have a medical condition that might require treatment, tell your doctor about your trip to arrange in advance a prescription for the necessary amount of medication.

    4

Keep all your important travel documents including your passport, travel insurance and flight tickets with you in a small carry-on bag at all times while traveling through the airport. Take a book or magazine to keep you entertained on the flight.

According to the TSA (see Reference 1), avoid placing liquids in your hand luggage if possible, and also pack lightly, as this will increase your chances of moving through airport security checks at a faster rate. Keep cameras and film in your hand luggage as these can be damaged by the X-rays used to scan luggage at airports.
