How to Pack for Travel to the Tropics

You'll have a better trip to a tropical destination if you take a little time before you leave to pack carefully. There's more than just the heat to consider, although that's important.

Instructions

Packing for the Tropics

    1

"The tropics" include a lot of different places, so familiarize yourself with the climate of your particular destination and pack accordingly. You're not going to need quite the same gear for a trip to a rain forest destination or a beach as you will an arid destination.

    2

Pack light not only fewer items, but light in the sense of light cotton clothing, especially shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Unless you're absolutely sure you will not need to dress up a little, include one nice shirt/blouse and long pants or a skirt.

A rule of thumb for how much to pack is 1 1/2 outfits per day of travel, up to a week. If you're traveling longer than that, do laundry. Only the most remote destinations don't have laundry facilities.

    3

Pack special clothing for special events. If you're going to take a long walk up the side of a dormant volcano, for example, bring the correct shoes. If you're going to spend most of your time at water sports, bring more than one swimsuit and some water shoes. Always bring at least one hat.

    4

Take your usual array of personal hygiene products, as you would on any trip. Also, bring any medicines you regularly take along with copies of prescriptions. Sunscreen is also very important in the tropics, since the sun is a lot more intense at tropical latitudes. You might find sunscreen at your destination, but it's best to be prepared.

    5

Pack a fanny pack or small backpack. When you get to a place where you can stow your main bags, you'll want to carry items in a smaller bag when you're going mobile in the tropics. Also, bring plastic bags for dirty laundry and many other uses.
