How to Travel With Cosmetics

The avid traveler knows that cosmetics need extra attention when traveling. Whether you are flying or driving, your cosmetic bag will need to be packed properly to ensure your items arrive safely. Along with improper packing, the biggest mistake many women make is taking too many products with them when they travel. While every woman needs her basic essentials for both day and night, traveling is not the time to try new products or bring along rarely used items. Stick with the basics and only take what you need when traveling with cosmetics.

Write down the products you use for your daytime look. These items may include cleanser, moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer and eye and cheek makeup. As you apply makeup to your face, jot each product down on a piece of paper so you have a reference sheet handy when packing.

Keep track of what products you use for a night look. If you expand beyond the basic daytime look for a night style, include those extra products. Look to your travel schedule to see if you will need any dramatic makeup for evening engagements. While it is always a good idea to bring an extra eyeshadow for last-minute plans, it is not necessary to bring all of your cosmetics.

Lay your products in front of you and separate what you need to take with you in your purse or carry-on and what can go into checked baggage suitcase. Air travel officials will only allow certain types of products within the passenger area; therefore, keep your purse items minimal and only bring the necessities. These items may include a moisturizer, lip balm and mascara to freshen your face when you land.

Place liquid items such as cleanser, moisturizer and foundation in a zip-top plastic baggie to travel. These items may bounce around during travel and could spring a leak.

Pack your powder cosmetics in a padded cosmetic bag. The padding will provide a cushion while traveling and help you avoid broken shadows and powders. Place the plastic baggie with the liquid products inside the padded cosmetic bag, if possible. If not, then slide the plastic baggie into a bag with other liquid products such as shampoos and conditioners.

Slide the cosmetic bag between items of clothing inside the suitcase. This will give your cosmetics more protection as your suitcase is jostled. In addition, pack liquid items that are not in the cosmetic bag in a secure compartment within the suitcase.
