Infant air travel tips are mentioned below which keep all your last minute hassles at bay and make your and your kid's journey pleasant.

Infant Air Travel Rules

There are certain rules set by Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) for infant air travel safety. A child in between the age of 2 weeks to 2 years can travel on the lap of an adult without any extra cost on a domestic flight. No boarding pass is needed but an boarding verification document is required for infant air travel identification. Seats can also be reserved with affordable infant fares for which a boarding pass is issued. While traveling on this ticket, birth certificate is needed in order to validate the age of the infant. Like any other passenger, infants have to go through the scanning process. Even though there are some air travel restrictions on carrying liquids, gels, etc. on boards, it is not strictly applicable on people traveling with small babies. However, one must declare all those items for inspection.

Tips for Traveling with an Infant

Here are some useful air travel tips that will minimize your hassles and ensure a safe and comfortable journey:
  • Book your tickets in advance to avoid any last minute uncertainties. Look for a seat that are at the front of the plane as these seats have sufficient legroom. Do not take any seat at the rear end of the plane as they are closer to the engine and causes a lot of noise.
  • Try to select a flight that does not cause any disturbance to your baby's normal routine. If it is a long journey, then book a flight at night. Then your baby can sleep throughout the journey.
  • Inform the airlines that you are going to travel with an infant. They will give you detailed information on the facilities that are available for passengers with small babies. Call the airlines office one day before the journey to confirm whether your requirements are on their computer or not.
  • Flying with a baby means lots and lots of baby clothes, baby foods, baby bath care, baby sun care, baby toys and other supplies. However, it is advisable to take only those things that you need and minimize the size, weight and number of bags.
  • Your diaper bag must contain extra foods and diapers as the flight may get delayed. Also pack baby wipes, bibs, a spare set of baby clothes and a top for yourself. These items will help you in case there is spillages while feeding the baby. A blanket will also help to keep them warm and comfortable.
  • Both you and your little baby should wear comfortable clothes while traveling. Infants should be dressed in layers which you can change as per the requirement of the environment. You should also dress in layers as it will help in case of spit ups or spills.
  • On the day of journey, reach the airport much before the flight time to avoid any last minute confusion. If your baby needs a diaper change, do it before boarding the plane as changing on board is not very easy.
  • During take off and landing, babies feel pressure in their ears and they get restless. To avoid this, try to breast feed them or let them suck on a dummy feeding bottle. This will make the pressure even and they will feel more comfortable.
All these air travel tips will help you to prepare you before the journey. However, you have to be positive and keep yourself cool while flying. Suppose your baby is crying a lot on flight, do not get nervous if you see other passengers are getting disturbed. Ignore them and try to pacify your child. Do not hesitate to take help from the airline staff as and when required. You will be surprised to see that they are very helpful to parents who are doing air travel with infants.
