Milk Ideas for a Toddler While Traveling

Relax and travel worry-free by bringing along, or purchasing, milk along way during your travels with your toddler. Your method and time of travel determines how to prepare and store your milk. If you are taking a commercial travel method, such as the train or airlines, call ahead to find out their restrictions on different liquid substances.

Keep It on Ice

Fill a cooler full of ice when traveling by car to your destination. Coolers are designed to insulate an area to keep it warm or cold, depending on your needs and will maintain the temperature for up to eight hours depending on the temperature of its surroundings. Fill bottles or plastic cups with milk and secure the lid tightly to the bottle or cup. The cups or bottles will shift around once the ice starts to melt and may dump over or upside down; therefore, it is essential to have a tight lid. During your trip, stop at a rest stop or gas station to refill the ice once it starts to melt.

Purchase During the Trip

Purchase your milk as you go if you will be traveling throughout the day using various methods. If your family will be flying or a using several methods, such as a car, airplane and/or bus, consider purchasing your milk throughout the day to keep it fresh. Milk can be found at airports, available on airplanes (possibly for an additional small fee), gas stations and restaurants.

Carry in an Insulated Bag

Carry prepackaged milk on an airplane, or other form of transportation, using an insulated bag. Check with airline restrictions prior to arriving at the airport; however, if the flight is lengthy and you have a preference of what type of milk your child drinks, the airlines may allow an insulated bag on the plane. The milk should be bottled and capped, possibly newly purchased with the seal still intact and placed inside a cooling, insulated bag. The bags can be purchased at retailers and grocery stores.

Freeze for Travel

Freeze milk for travel using plastic bottles. According to Thrifty Fun, 2 percent milk is the best to freeze. You can purchase milk in advance, pour the milk into plastic bottles until it is 3/4 full and freeze. The milk will expand slightly so avoid filling the bottle up completely. Place milk into a bag that will be easy to access while traveling and allow them to thaw when needed. Depending on the temperature of its surroundings, the milk may take up to two hours to thaw. Milk that is frozen and can be thawed at a slower speed can be place into an insulated bag or cooler.
