Starting Up a Travel and Tour Agency

As corporations seek to reduce costs, federal agencies cut travel in order to limit carbon footprints and American families become more cautious with expenses, everyone's looking for creative travel solutions. This can mean exciting opportunities for those interested in starting up new travel agency. The rewards can be great, with some travel agent incomes exceeding $100,000 a year. But hard work and creativity are required and success is not guaranteed.

Decide what type of travel agency you want to start up. You might decide to run a small operation out of your house. Alternatively, you may want to buy into an existing franchise. Some agents work as independent contractors at established agencies, which can give you a toe-hold while creating your new agency's reputation.

Meet your home state's requirements. States vary as to what they expect from new travel agencies. Some require certification, others want the agency to register. Many require new agencies to post bonds. A good source of information is the American Society of Travel Agents.

Earn credentials, which will give you credibility with potential clients and travel suppliers. One of the more respected credentials is an ID card from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In order to be eligible for the card, you have to earn a salary as a travel agent and work 20 hours a week in the business.

Buy materials. You'll need office supplies. Most importantly, you'll need a good website. Expect start-up costs to run several thousand dollars, though home-based travel agencies may be more cost-effective.

Get creative. Think about what you can offer to the travel industry that makes you unique. Some new travel agents package luxury tours. Others specialize in eco-tourism, adventure trips or student travel.

Promote your new agency. Start a newsletter. Make cold calls. Attend ASTA meetings.
