How to Become a Certified Travel Agent

Travel agents help plan trips for their clients while counseling them on transportation, hotels, car rentals and vacation packages. Employment in the profession is expected to decline a percentage point between 2008 and 2018 due to the ease of online travel reservations, but there will still be opportunities for people who want to become agents. Having certified travel associate (CTA) training will improve your chances of getting a foothold in the industry.

Instructions

    1

Call your local travel agencies and speak with the manager or a senior consultant. Ask her if her agency or chain of stores offers a travel school certificate program, or if she knows of any nearby. These courses will often require observing in a travel agency and include classroom training. Training can be part of an associate's degree program or a certificate program.

    2

Search online for travel training schools (see Resources).

    3

Visit The Travel Institute's website and begin studying at home. The site provides information regarding entry-level training (see Resources).

    4

Take The Travel Institute's National Travel Agent Proficiency (TAP) test. This exam demonstrates to your future employers that you have a basic proficiency to work in the travel industry. Passing the test will reduce the amount of work experience you'll need to obtain your certification.

    5

Get hired full-time and continue to educate yourself. Earn additional certificates, including the title of certified travel consultant. The Travel Institute offers many areas of study, such as Destination Specialist Certificate (DS) and Lifestyle Specialist Certificate (LS), to advance your career.
