The route from Edmonton to Vancouver takes only a day, but the changes in landscape are vast. Despite having one of the lowest population densities in North America, Edmonton is a surprisingly cosmopolitan city--and has the largest mall!

Instructions

Know the Route

    1

Prepare for a trip that is almost exactly 24 hours long. You will leave Edmonton at approximately 9 a.m. on either a Monday, a Thursday or a Saturday.

    2

Keep in mind that you will ride into a new time zone and gain an hour. Plan to get off the train in Vancouver at 8 a.m. one day after you get on it.

    3

Prepare for possible delays in winter. The trip is comparatively brief, but it covers some of the roughest terrain in Canada: the Rockies.

Review Your Trip Choices

    4

Look at the differences between the classes before you book your travel. Silver & Blue Class has five levels and entitles the traveler to a bed and shower, plus access to club and observation cars and complimentary dining in the dining car. It cost significantly more than Comfort Class, which requires the traveler to sleep sitting up and to pay for his or her meals individually.

    5

Expect to check most of your baggage, including your faithful four-legged companion. The train company requires all large items, including animals and sports equipment to be checked into the baggage car.

    6

Be advised that alcohol consumption is governed by the laws of the province that the train is traveling through. For the most part, if you want to drink on the train, you need to use the train's beverage service.

Book Your Travel

    7

Recognize when you are eligible for discounts. Children, students, seniors, conference-goers and those traveling in a large group can travel at a discount. Discounts are also given for booking your travel more than five days in advance.

    8

Book your travel online, over the telephone or through a travel agent. You can also buy your tickets in person at the train station, at the time of your travel or in advance.
