How to Heat Your Travel Trailer

A travel trailer can provide a great sense of mobility. Simply hook up the travel trailer, and you can drive across the country and camp at many a campground. However, many travel trailers are not great in the cold weather. But with just a few simple modifications, you can boost the amount of heat that is maintained within your travel trailer so that you can take it across the country, no matter what time of year.

Instructions

    1

Fire up an electric heater. Many travel trailers come with a generator that brings power to the outlets of a travel trailer. Simply turn on the electric heater, and the small space will be heated in no time. Just remember not to sleep with the electric heater firing, as that can be a fire hazard.

    2

Replace current shades or curtains with thermal shades. There are several different types of thermal shades on the market. These shades help absorb the sun's rays, using them to heat the inside of the travel trailer, while blocking the leakage of cold hair.

    3

Hang wool blankets over the front door. Since they are primarily used in the summer, travel trailers tend to have weak weather stripping. Hanging a wool blanket over the front door will keep the cold drafts out, and, more importantly, the heat in.

    4

Cut foam in the shape of the travel trailer vents. Many travel trailers have vents to keep them cool in the summer. Even if these vents are closed, they are sometimes not sealed properly. Cut foam to form and place them over the vents, blocking out the cold air and keeping the warm air inside.

    5

Create a greenhouse for your travel trailer. Even tough the sun does not warm up the earth during the winter, you can still use the sun's rays to heat the travel trailer. Using PVC pipe, which snaps together, build a greenhouse that can fit over the structure of your travel trailer. For the greenhouse plastic, use commercial-grade green house material or clear plastic. Build the snap-together structure so that smaller segments can be broken down and stored inside the travel trailer when not in use.

    6

Install a heat strip. A heat strip is analogous to a furnace. This is an after-market feature that may be installed into a travel trailer. While an electric heat lamp is portable, the heat strip is built in to keep the travel trailer warm.
