A backpack is a bag made of cloth that is carried on the back and is used during camping, hiking and trekking. It is also used by college or school students for carrying books and other things. Backpacks of different material and various designs are available. They are primarily classified as frame-less and the ones with frame. The ones with frame can have an internal or an external frame. These backpacks are also heavier than the frame-less backpacks. Ultralight backpacking will be the most beneficial for hiking.

Wilderness backpacking usually occurs in the areas where there are less facilities and hence, the backpacker needs to pack everything, including food, water and tents. There are various things that you should consider before buying a backpack. Do not ever consider buying a lower quality backpack that does not come with any guarantee. You must look for a backpack made from some waterproofing material and padded straps. It is also good to choose a backpack that has many outside pockets. This will help you pack different things separately without creating a potpourri in your backpack.

Packing a Backpack for Camping
  • The first and the simplest thing that you must know is that you should pack all the heavy things very close to your back. This will help in the even distribution of the weight.
  • While hiking on slopes, you must pack the heavy objects at the top and the lighter ones at the bottom. This will help in reducing the excess weight on your back and hence, prevent lower back pain.
  • The snacks should be packed in the pockets of the backpack; while the other things required for meals should be packed inside. Remember to tightly close the cork of fuel bottles, if any. It is also advisable not to pack the fuel bottle close to the camping food or alcohol.
  • The things required for sleeping like a sleeping bag, pillow or nightdresses should be kept at the bottom of the backpack as you will not require these things during the day. The bedding will also be like a soft padding for other things to be packed.
  • The things that are frequently required like the map, sunglasses, water bottles should be kept at the top where they are handy and are easily accessible whenever needed.
  • Remember that a tent should always be packed vertically, behind the straps of the backpack. Certain backpacks have a vertical compartment to store tents or water bottles.
  • If you have planned hiking in rainy weather, it is advisable for you to carry the backpack cover so that the things inside, especially the food, does not get spoiled. You should carry a backpack cover even if your backpack is made of waterproof material.
  • When packing a backpack for hiking, remember that heavy articles should be evenly distributed between the group. Do not make one person carry all the heavy things.
While going for backpack shopping, look out for a lightweight backpack that is made of light weight material or made with frames of aluminum. So, pack a hiking backpack and enjoy your outdoor camps, without any worry!
