How to Travel Between Budapest & Prague

As just 345 miles separate these capital cities, it's not surprising that you would want to visit both Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic, on your trip to Eastern Europe. No matter where you plan to begin your journey, be it Budapest or Prague, you can employ a number of methods to travel between the two cities, including taking a train, plane, boat or bus. If money is not an issue, you may want to hire a taxi.

Instructions

    1

Travel between Budapest and Prague by train. According to Czech-Transport.com, six trains operate daily between Budapest and Prague, two of which are overnight "sleeper" trains. Purchase your tickets at either Budapest Keleti, Prague Holesovice or Prague Hl.n. railway stations to get the lowest price. Alternatively, you can book a ticket online at raileurope.com if you wish to book in advance. Depending on which train you select, the journey can take between seven and nine hours.

    2

Take a flight on either Malev Hungarian Airlines or Czech Airlines. Both airlines offer daily, nonstop service between the two cities. Visit malev.com or czechairlines.com to book your ticket in advance. The journey takes less than an hour.

    3

Cruise the River Danube to get between Budapest and Prague. Many options exist for these cruises, so it's a good idea to contact a travel agent in Prague or Budapest to help find one to meet your specifications. Travel times vary, as many cruises stop in different cities along the Danube---this is not the option to choose if you're in a hurry.

    4

Take a bus. Czech-Transport.com recommends "Student Agency" buses, which take seven hours and 30 minutes and stop in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava en route. The price for these buses is 20 euros one-way, as of September 2010.

    5

Hire a taxi or minibus between the two cities, but be prepared to pay if you choose this option. The Discover Czech Travel Agency, for example, posts a rate of 538 euros per car of one to four people, which jumps to 578 euros if you hire a minibus holding four to eight. Travel time is about five hours.
