How to Travel Cheap on the DC to New York Bus

If you're traveling from New York City to Washington, DC (or from DC to NYC), your cheapest option is probably the bus. Buses typically leave from central points in Washington, DC, and surrounding areas like Bethesda and Arlington, and travel to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Whether you want to see the lights of Broadway, the National Mall, or just stroll around two of the world's most beautiful cities, you can get a one way DC-NY or NY-DC bus ticket for around $20. Or $1. Or absolutely free.

Instructions

    1

Review your options. A number of bus companies make the run from DC to NYC, most going to Manhattan, though some have stops in Brooklyn as well. Competition is fierce, and prices are pretty cheap. The original Chinatown bus lines, making inexpensive runs from Washington's to New York's Chinatowns, have been joined by half a dozen other companies offering similar fares. What's more, some companies allow you to travel in style, with cushy seats, and amenities like free wireless or on-board movies.

    2

Check the prices and specials often. Prices change from time to time, as do services offered, so check on the latest offerings. At the time of publication, one-way fares from Washington, DC, to New York City are typically $20 to 25, with even cheaper options available.

    3

Search for special bargains. Bolt Bus, TripperBus and Megabus actually have tickets available for $1, if you purchase them long enough in advance. $5 and $10 tickets are available as well. Check for special deals at Greyhound, Peter Pan Bus, Washington Deluxe and Vamoose as well -- this is a competitive business.

    4

Get your ticket for free. Several bus lines, including Bolt Bus, TripperBus and Vamoose Bus, offer free tickets to frequent travelers -- typically, pay for four tickets, and your fifth trip is free.
