How to Travel for Free Around the World

A trip around the world can cost thousands of dollars and require years of planning, but for some people, the pull of wanderlust is too strong. They don't want to wait until their retirement to see the world and won't let a lack of money get in their way. If you're one such traveler, there are several ways to see the world without spending anything. In fact, some of them will even pay you.

Cruise Ships

One of the easiest ways to travel around the world for free is to get a job aboard a cruise ship. These jobs often employ individuals with special talents for several months at a time, and they provide their employees with the opportunity to see the world for free while living on a cruise ship. Even if you don't believe you possess any special skills, it's a good idea to check job postings (see Resources), as cruise ships employ a variety of people, ranging from accountants to entertainers.

Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is an option for Americans looking to give something back to the world. The application process is long, but successful applicants will be posted to sites around the world to help with an array of programs. The Peace Corps focuses its efforts on the fields of health, education, community development, business, technology, agriculture and the environment, so if you have experience in those fields, you have a better chance of being accepted. Visit the Peace Corps' website (see Resources) for more details on the application process.

Teach English

One of the most common ways to travel the world for free is to get a job teaching English abroad. If you have a Bachelor's degree and are a native English speaker, you shouldn't have much trouble finding such a job. One drawback is that you will be expected to stay in the country in which you teach until your contract expires. However, many people arrange for a new contract to start the moment their last one finishes and jump from country to country for several years. Many of these jobs will also arrange your flight and accommodations.

Vagrant Travel

Whether it's hitchhiking from one town to the next or a self-planned walking tour, some individuals travel with nothing but the clothes on their back. Plan your trip carefully ahead of time to avoid problems, and utilize websites such as CouchSurfing (see Resources) for completely free accommodation. One problem you will encounter is crossing the ocean. However, some travelers manage to hitchhike aboard yachts. If you plan to do this, dress neatly and ask ahead of time if the ship's owner expects you to pay. Your chances of catching a ride will also be greatly improved if you have nautical skills and knowledge of sailing.
