How to Be a Travel Nurse

A Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse can be a travel nurse. The only difference in the job description between a traveling nurse or a nurse who works permanently in a nursing facility is that a travel nurse should have at least one year experience as a clinical nurse. The travel nurse works three months at a time. It is a great career choice if you love adventure and travel.

Obtain a license to be either a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Registered Nurse. You need a license to work in every one of the 50 states.

Gain at least one year of experience working at a hospital or nursing home.

Decide where you want to travel. Consider working in the United States or possibly another country or even another continent.

Research travel agencies online or at a nearby library. Talk to co-workers or friends in the healthcare profession to get input as well.

Enjoy your work as a travel nurse. Some of the benefits of this position are: you can experience in various venues you'd normally not see; your pay is typically higher than a non-traveling nurse's salary; you get more freedom choosing where you want to work and you get to meet a broader range of new people.

Choose what agency you want to work for as a travel nurse. Talk to different agencies in your city and in others in your state. Gather all the information and review it carefully. Then, decide what agency you want to partner with for your first position. You may or may not stay with this agency for subsequent positions.

Decide if becoming a travel nurse is the career for you. You can always change your mind and "settle down" in one place later on.
