How to Become a Travel Editor

If you have a great understanding of the travel world, then become a travel editor and work on something you love. A travel editor reads travel pieces and corrects errors in word usage, grammar or sense. Also, the travel editor will resolve any inconsistent sentences or ideas. If you enjoy travel, reading and writing, then you should consider a career as a travel editor.

Remember that a great education in a wide array of subjects will help when trying to become a travel editor. Take some classes in travel, writing and editing. Many editing and writing courses are offered through universities and colleges. Keep learning about the written word.

Work for your school's travel section in their newspaper or local school magazine when you are in school or university. Even if you are not editing at the time, it is good to learn both sides of the writing and editing industry.

Get a summer internship or part-time job at a newspaper or other publishing corporation. If you can build your expertise during your college years, then getting a job after college will be easier.

Develop good computer skills. Become familiar with specific online technologies and other necessary software (such as Photoshop, Framemaker, etc.) that are commonly used in the publishing industry.

Decide what type of travel company you would like to work for and if you want to work for a single publisher or a big travel corporation. You might be able to work on a project-by-project basis for a variety of publishers. Or you might prefer to work in-house or freelance for a travel magazine or newspaper.
