Taking a train from Portugal to Spain is an easy and enjoyable experience. Fares are reasonable due to the close proximity of these two nations, and the train systems are reliable, stretching from main cities like Lisbon and Madrid to outlying areas as far as Andalusia and Algarve. Follow these steps to book your ticket.

Instructions

Book Your Train Tickets

    1

Call (888) 382-RAIL (382-7245) to book your rail tickets, or visit the Rail Europe Web site (see the Resources section below). Choose between a single destination pass, or one for multiple destinations. The latter may be less expensive than point-to-point tickets if you plan to take several trains.

    2

Select a class of service. First-class amenities usually include your choice of seats, a meal, drinks, newspapers and audio/visual options.

    3

Purchase seats at the Lisbon station if you don't have time to buy a pass before leaving America, but expect to pay a surcharge when you do. Additional charges are added on any train that requires a reservation.

Travel From Portugal to Spain

    4

Take a direct train from Lisbon into Madrid. From more remote areas of Portugal, first take an interregional train to Lisbon. Travel time from Lisbon to Madrid is an estimated 2 to 3 hours, depending on the speed of the train and the number of stops.

    5

Examine the ticket to identify your seat and train numbers. Remember that not all trains from Portugal have reserved seats.

    6

Read the illuminated signs on the side of each train before boarding to ensure you get on the right one. Portugal has many trains running from the same platforms.

    7

Present your ticket when the conductor requests it. They will assess fines if you misplace your ticket.

    8

Book train travel to other destinations in Spain via the AVE train system, accessible from the Madrid station.
