Heading west from Toronto to Winnipeg, a traveler will cross from the biggest metropolis in Canada into grand forests on the edge of shimmering lakes. Whether for business or pleasure, book this route to see several sides of Canada all in the same day.

Instructions

Know the Route

    1

Know that the trip will take about a day and a half. Trains leave Toronto in the morning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, respectively arriving in Winnipeg in the afternoon on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

    2

Be advised that Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and the train station is conveniently located downtown. It is easily accessible, and travelers can visit many attractions just hours before they must board the train.

Investigate Your Train Options

    3

Decide which class you want to travel: Comfort class is the economical choice, costing about $280 Canadian. Silver & Blue class starts at around $550 Canadian for the least expensive of the five levels, to roughly $1,600 Canadian for the triple bedroom. Because this trip is so short and encompasses only one night, it is probably prudent to save the money and try to sleep in a sitting position.

    4

Be cognizant of the fact that Silver & Blue class isn't just about comfort. Just like first class on an airplane, it is a good place to meet business contacts, and the train has a Silver & Blue lounge created with this purpose in mind, complete with free drinks and newspapers.

Book Your Travel

    5

Save money by realizing that even though the weather on this route is quite moderate for Canada and rarely causes delays, there are off-peak rates for train travel during the late fall, winter and early spring. You can also get a discount when you book more than five days in advance of your trip.

    6

Be aware that since the Toronto to Winnipeg route is more of a business route it is a good way to explore Canada's center without getting gouged like a tourist.

    7

Plan ways to occupy any children who may travel with you. When booking, remember that Silver & Blue class fare includes several planned activities for kids, which can be a lifesaver.
