Traveling is a great experience, and the more prepared you are in terms of itineraries, goals and finances, the more enjoyable it can be. However, not all travel adventures can be planned far in advance. You may find yourself in the middle of a vacation and feel compelled to travel to a certain place for a specific tour, or to meet someone in a different country.

Instructions

    1

Create a list of the tour companies you are willing to work with. Then contact them personally about their rates and schedule. Also ask if they have discounted or prorated rates for travelers who won't be joining for the complete tour. Ask them about their special offers of the moment, and be sure to tell them about your travel plans. They can better help you if you identify the places you want to go and the length of your vacation.

    2

When you reach the first country on your trip, visit its nearest tourism office. References such as maps and books can be obtained online prior to your trip if you have an idea of where you are traveling. Most countries' tourism offices have websites. However, if you find yourself in an unplanned location, contacting the city's tourism office will provide you with information, brochures and recommendations on where to go and what to see.

    3

Get information about the specific company from tourist spots, and create a prioritized list of locations you want to visit. Vendors and other service representatives know the needs of travelers; tourist spots usually have a wealth of information available through brochures and the experiences of other travelers. Reach out to people who have been to the place you are thinking about visiting, as their stories will give you a real feel for the place. This will help you decide which locations to go to first. Also, working with a tour company through a referral may garner you a discount or other incentives.

    4

Shop around for deals online to complement your travel. You can find flights, hotels and rental cars from various companies on your list. Create your own travel adventure. Sometimes, a tour company places a high markup on a tour that you can get cheaper at another company. Ask the companies you are working with if you can sign up just for the tour, instead of the whole package with flights and vacation destinations.

    5

Evaluate your needs if you are on a budget. Prioritize budget first if you are working within a price range, since you don't want to find yourself in an unfamiliar country with no money in your pocket. If you can book a flight by yourself online for a lower price, do so. Some large companies like STA Travel have offices worldwide--so if you are already a customer, it may be more comfortable for you to schedule a tour with a company you have already worked with.
