For some trips, it's easier to do your own research and find the best price for airlines and hotels online, but for complicated itineraries, you're better off hiring a travel agent. These days, agents can't count on commissions from airlines and hotels to make their living and will be charging you a fee, but their expertise and advice is worth the money.

Instructions

    1

Ask friends or colleagues if they can recommend a good travel agent. If you get a recommendation, ask for that agent specifically; you may not be happy with another agent at the same agency.

    2

Begin shopping for a travel agent by checking with the American Society of Travel Agents or the Travel Institute. Both organizations have websites that allow you to search for agents in your area.

    3

Select from agents that are affiliated with national companies. These agents can take advantage of the relationships between their parent companies and airlines, hotels and cruise lines to get you better rates.

    4

Find an agency that specializes in the kind of trip you're taking. Some agencies handle trips to certain foreign countries, others handle cruises or trips around the world.

    5

Hire an agent that has an 800 number you can call if you have a problem or an emergency while you're traveling.
