How to Transform a Travel Trailer to a Mini House

Travel trailers are ideal for families who are unsure of where they want to reside permanently. But after finding a plot of land in an acceptable location or a long-term campground where you can rent or purchase a spot, you may decide that it is time to convert your travel trailer into a mini house. Before you get started with the conversion process, make sure you park on flat even ground and you have working electrical, water, and sewer hook-ups installed where you park.

Level your trailer off. Hook up your travel trailer to the water, sewer, and electrical connections. Contact your local cable service provider to have cable, phone, and Internet connections installed and connected to your trailer.

Cover your tires with plastic tire tarps. Build permanent wooden skirting around the base of your travel trailer, if you want to keep the trailer stationary. You can include doors in the skirting to use this space for additional storage.

Build a wooden planter box to cover your tow hitch. Paint the skirting and planter box the same color.

Add a shingled roof extension over the front of your trailer in place of the awning. You can also build a full roof to cover your trailer, if desired.Construct a porch and deck with steps, instead of using the metal pull down steps. Paint, as desired.

Make a walkway with gravel and spaced out slate tiles. Plant a lawn and garden. If you have an outdoor shower, you can use it to water grass and plants. If you want more privacy, install a fence around your travel trailer to mark your space.

Build or purchase an outdoor shed for additional storage, if you have enough space available. If you do not have a washer and dryer or dishwasher inside your trailer, you can build the shed close to your hook-up ports and keep these appliances in your shed.

Winterize your travel trailer, if you live in an area that gets snow.

Replace the curtains, blinds, bedding, wallpaper, shower curtain, pillows, carpeting, and hardware to create a more personalized atmosphere. Install additional shelving units, as needed.
