How to Travel Super Light

Packing super light will make your trip easier and a lot less expensive, especially if you fly. Pack less, pack smarter and save money. For many trips, all you need is one wheeled carry-on suitcase. And no matter where you are going, packing light will be easy on your back and your budget.

Instructions

    1

Consider your needs. What will the weather be like, and what sports or activities will you be taking part in? Check the forecast for the days you will be gone. Then make a list of planned activities and the clothes you will need.

    2

Put out your clothing on a table or bed. Choose only clothes that go together, so you can mix and match. Lightweight separates are best, so you can layer. Almost everything should be washable. Take items that will dry overnight on a hanger or shower rod.

    3

Select at least three complete sets of underthings, and carefully select your travel outfit. The clothes and shoes you travel in should be the heaviest you are taking. Plan to carry your coat or jacket or sweater. Wear dark clothing so it doesn't arrive looking soiled.

    4

In addition to your travel clothes, select a few bottoms and tops you can mix and match. Knits travel well. Your probably want a second pair of shoes, but think light if possible. In summer, sandals are good. Great walking sandals are available that are both lightweight and easy on the feet.

    5

Take your preferred sleepwear, but see if clothing can multitask. Can you sleep in a simple T-shirt? Perhaps rubber beach thongs can serve as shower shoes, slippers and sandals. A sweater or light jacket can double as a robe and even a pool cover-up.

    6

After you have necessary clothing, add special items and cosmetics. A swimsuit doesn't take much space. If you have a lot of medicines or cosmetics, take only what you need. Take enough vitamins for the trip only, and put them in small zip plastic bags or pillboxes. Let your cosmetics multitask: Use shampoo/conditioner combination; use soap instead of shave cream. You can probably buy these at your destination or get them free if you are in a hotel.

    7

Finally, check that you have only what you need. Eliminate any items you can. You probably have a lot of electronics as must-haves, but look at these carefully. How many back-up batteries do you really need? After you have removed the extras, pack your suitcase and you are ready to go.
