The bus is one of the most common vehicles used in travel. Many schools use buses to take children to and from school. Many cities implement bus systems in order to cut back on traffic and in order to give commuters an alternative to driving a car. Interstate bus services take travelers all across the country much more cheaply than train or airplane travel.

History

Buses go back to the days of horses and carriages. Buses were not widespread until the 1820s, and about 10 years later, steam-powered buses were produced. At the same time, trolleybuses populated cities. As automobiles came into existence, so did the motor-powered bus. These buses can now be found all over the world.

Significance

Bus travel is a cheap way to get from one place to another. Bus depots like Greyhound can be found all over the United States. These buses will take travelers as far as they want to go. There are also plenty of intercity bus transportation systems that take travelers to and from airports and throughout the city.

Features

Bus travel is cheap and reliable. Interstate bus travel is cheaper than taking a train or an airplane, and frequent bus travelers can sign up for frequent traveler discounts. Intercity bus travel cuts down on the cost of gas, and bus travelers never have to worry about finding parking in cramped cities that often charge for precious parking space. Additionally, bus travel in cities helps cut back on traffic.

Warning

Interstate bus travel can be long, boring and exhausting. Buses rarely travel from one destination to another in a straight line, often making several stops along the way. Also, for really long bus travels, travelers might have to switch buses several times. Waiting for the next bus can be time consuming, and many travelers become confused when switching buses.

Prevention/Solution

One of the biggest biggest concerns when traveling on a bus is losing your luggage. Make sure that each piece of luggage is tagged, and make sure that the bus driver puts your luggage on the bottom of the bus. During each connection, find an information terminal, and confirm which bus you are supposed to be switching to. Also, entertainment and food help make a long interstate bus trip ride go smoothly.
