How to Bring a Travel Trailer Into Canada

Bringing a travel trailer into Canada is not complicated as long as you take all the appropriate steps. With heightened border security, people passing from the United States into Canada with their campers must properly complete paperwork and pay fees to obtain permission to continue their journey. Printing a checklist from the Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicles and collecting all proof of ownership will ensure that you have everything you need for a smooth crossing.

Instructions

    1

Visit Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) website Select "English" on the first page. Click on the tab titled "Importing a Vehicle". Click on "Before You Import" to find out about your trailer's admissibility and other import information.

    2

Call the travel trailer manufacturer for a recall clearance letter and to verify the VIN. Gather your notarized bill of sale, title, temporary tag and registration.

    3

Print and complete the Vehicle Import Form -- Form 1, available on the RIV website. Drive the travel trailer to a border entry point and declare it at Customs. Submit the Vehicle Import form to the Canada Border Services Agency.

    4

Pay the Canadian goods and services tax. Pay the registration fee for opening a file with Transport Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles.

    5

Receive the RIV inspection form in the mail and take the travel trailer to an RIV certified inspection center.

    6

Call or visit the Canadian provincial or territorial licensing authority to discover how to license the travel trailer.
