How to Dewinterize a Travel Trailer

The sun is higher in the sky, the temperatures are increasing and the snows are melting. It's time to dewinterize your travel trailer and get ready for outdoor adventures. If your camper trailer is winterized you need to flush out the systems, check the connections and replace the battery. Take the time and you will have a better chance to enjoy your travel-trailer experience.

Instructions

    1

Set your battery for the camper next to the charger and connect the charger's red cable to the battery red terminal and the black to black. Set the charger for 12v and turn the charger on. Let the battery charge as you complete the rest of your dewinterizing tasks.

    2

Connect a water source to the camper's water hookup. Turn on every faucet and taps and let the water run through the system for at least 10 minutes. This flushes out antifreeze from drains and plumbing lines. Flush the toilet several times to rid the bowl and line of antifreeze. Turn off the faucets and taps.

    3

Cut off any heat film from the windows or vents. Use a scraper to get rid of any scraps left after cutting the heat film from the windows.

    4

Place the camper's propane tanks on the tank mounts, typically found at the trailer's tow arm. Connect the propane hose connections using an adjustable wrench. Turn the gas to on and place a sponge with warm soapy water on each of the connections. Look for soap bubbles forming at the connection points. If bubbles are present, replace the hoses and connections --- bubbles indicate leaks in the gas line.

    5

Remove the battery from the charger and put it into the trailer's battery housing. Connect the black cable of the trailer to the battery black terminal first. The black cable is the ground wire. Connect the red cable to the battery red terminal. Disconnect the water and drive the trailer to a certified dump station.

    6

Drain the grey, black and fresh water tanks. Fill the fresh water tanks with new water. Check the tires to ensure that pressure is within the recommended PSI for the tires. If they are low, take the tires to a service station and fill them to the recommended PSI.
