How to Travel by Train in Europe Safely

Traveling through Europe by train can be a thrilling experience. The trains run all over Europe and the cost is often cheaper than traveling by air. You can even travel by train in underwater tunnels to get from the United Kingdom to France and the like. However, if you don't take necessary precautions, train travel can be dangerous. By following basic travel safety tips and using a little common sense, your trip should be exactly what you envision it to be.

Instructions

    1

Make reservations in advance. If you are traveling in a couchette, request a top bunk to make yourself less accessible to thieves. Make sure the door of your couchette is locked from the inside to ensure only the conductor can get in. There is room for five people in a couchette, so you may have to share with strangers. Remind them to lock the door, especially at night while everyone is sleeping. If you choose to ride in the unreserved seats, be extra careful because there are no doors or locks.

    2

Always keep your bags with you and never leave them on the train. While on the train, store your bag in the compartment over the door and use the strap. Thieves are less likely to bother something they can't get to easily. While off the train, don't leave your bag unattended. It could be stolen or someone could even try to smuggle items over borders without your knowledge. Keep in mind, travel in Europe is far different than traveling in the United States; you are crossing country borders rather than state lines.

    3

Ask for help if you get lost. Most of the train stations will be tourist friendly and you should be able to find someone who speaks English easily, especially in the larger stations. Even if they don't speak English, if you're polite and courteous of their culture, most people will be willing to help you make it to your train on time if you just ask.

    4

Keep your valuables hidden and don't be flashy. Investing in a hidden money belt is recommended to store money, passports and any other item of value that will fit inside. Also, consider keeping valuables in your pillow and sleeping with your money belt on. Strapping the money belt to your thigh will keep it even safer.

    5

Use common sense. If something feels wrong, it usually is. Don't carry bags across borders for other people. Don't go off into a countryside that you know nothing about. Trust yourself to make smart decisions and your trip should go as smoothly as you plan it to.
