A trip from New York to Pittsburgh can be a traveling American history lesson. With stops in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, or an optional excursion to Washington D.C., a simple 9-hour train ride can be like a journey in a time machine.

Instructions

Choose an Itinerary

    1

Travel on direct train service from New York to Pittsburgh. Amtrak offers direct service to Pittsburgh from New York's Penn Station daily at 10:50 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 8:05 p.m. on the Pennsylvanian line.

    2

Consider alternative routes with stops in Philadelphia or Washington D.C. Leave earlier from New York and enjoy lunch in Philadelphia or sightsee in Washington D.C. and arrive in Pittsburgh at 11:43 p.m.

Visiting Historical Landmarks

    3

See Philadelphia's historical sights. Trains traveling to Philadelphia arrive at 30th Street Station, a historical landmark itself. Both Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center are less than one mile away.

    4

Stop in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to see the National Civil War Museum. Less than 2 miles away from the Harrisburg train station, the museum is located at the top of a hill overlooking Harrisburg in Reservoir Park.

Keep Children in Mind

    5

Remember seating options when planning family travel. Service on the Capitol Limited line offers a family bedroom option with beds for 2 adults and 2 children; this option also includes meals.

    6

Take advantage of fare discounts for children of all ages. Infants travel free while children ages 2 to 15 receive half-price fares. For older children and young adults, Amtrak offers student discounts.

Book and Pay for Tickets to Pittsburgh from New York

    7

Reserve tickets at New York's Penn Station. Penn Station is open 24 hours but ticketing through an agent is only available from 5:10 a.m. to 9:50 p.m. Quik-Trak machines are available 24 hours and can be used to reserve or pick up previously purchased tickets.

    8

Explore alternatives for reserving tickets. Use a travel agent to book tickets for a complex itinerary, visit Amtrak's Web site (see link below) or call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
