How to Change a Flat Tire on a Travel Trailer

Travel trailers -- whether they be motorized or a hauling trailer -- are susceptible to flat tires, especially when out on the road. When such a problem occurs, the tire can usually be replaced without the need for professional assistance. The process is essentially the same as changing the spare on a car, but it often requires more powerful tools and precautions due to the heavy weight of travel trailers.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire using a 4-way lug nut wrench. Test each side of the wrench to find the appropriate size to fit the lug nuts on the wheel. Each lug nut should be loosened just enough that they're roughly halfway off the bolts.

    2

Place a jack beneath the trailer, directly under a sturdy section of the trailer frame, such as a beam near the flat tire. If the trailer is on a soft surface, such as sand or gravel, put the jack on a piece of scrap wood to ensure sturdiness.

    3

Raise the jack until the tire lifts an inch off the ground. Read the directions for your particular jack if there is any confusion with this process. Jacks come in many different styles, so the operation steps tend to vary.

    4

Unscrew and completely remove the lug nuts from the wheel. Set them aside in a safe place.

    5

Pull the wheel off the trailer and replace it with the spare. Tighten the lug nuts with the lug nut wrench until they are snug.

    6

Lower the jack back down to its starting position.
