How to Keep a Travel Trailer Cooler

When it comes to camping, a travel trailer can be a lot of fun. It hooks right up to a car, truck or SUV, gets pulled to the campsite and the moment it is unloaded, voila, instant camping shelter. Because travel trailers are made primarily of aluminum or steel, however, they can get quite hot during the summer months. Here are some tips on how to keep a travel trailer cooler when the hot weather hits.

Instructions

    1

Hook up a portable air conditioner. A portable air conditioner is a stand-alone unit that blows cold air. There is an arm that extends outside of the window and expels any water or condensation. Simply plug in the portable air conditioner and the travel trailer will be cool in no time.

    2

Park the travel trailer under a shady tree. The tree can provide shade from the blistering sun. The leaf cover will help keep the trailer cooler.

    3

Run fans inside the travel trailer. A couple of fans cross blowing the air can add a nice cool feeling inside.

    4

Open the windows. This is especially good to do at night if the trailer has heated up during the day. Just leave the screens over the windows to stop bugs from getting inside.

    5

Hang a tarp above the trailer. Using rope, hang a tarp above the travel trailer to stop sun from beating down on the trailer's exterior. The deflection of the sun will keep the travel trailer cooler.

    6

Depending on the materials from which your trailer is made, painting the outside with a radiant-barrier paint to reflect the sun's rays could keep it cooler. Check with your local paint supply store to see what might be available.
