The way we travel has become more complex. There are so many rules and regulations to remember; even the smallest thing can set your travel plans into a stressful situation. Reduce the chances of this happening by planning ahead for your next trip.

Do research before you decide on anything. There are many decisions to make when you are traveling, regarding things like airlines, hotels, rental cars, activities, meetings, restaurants and budget. Don't get stuck with the most expensive of everything because you waited until the last minute. Whether it's business or pleasure, you can save yourself time and money by doing a little research. Go online or purchase guidebooks. If you're going to a specific city, you might be able to get a free guidebook from the them if you request it online.
2Book your flights and reserve your hotels and rental car as soon as you are able. If you are not flying, you should make appropriate arrangements. Map out your route if you are driving. Get tickets for a bus or train if you are traveling in that manner.
3Create an itinerary. Even if you are a spontaneous person, you should have some sort of plan for yourself. It will be easy for you to schedule in free time, but as long as you have some structure, you will not forget or miss out on anything.
4Remember to update your passport and any other documentation needed. It is a good idea to take photocopies of your passport and other important documents to take with you. If you lose the originals, you can easily go the nearest U.S. embassy to get a new one.
5Protect yourself. Purchase locks for your luggage and protection software for your laptop.
6Purchase enough snacks in advance. You never know when your flight will be delayed or if you are stuck in a traffic jam. Bring enough snacks to hold everyone over until you will have time to stop somewhere to eat. Avoid the rush of last minute shopping (and rushing!) by getting everything a few days before hand.
7Take care of your home. Plan for someone to come over and bring in the mail, water the plants, feed the pets and anything else that has to be done. Don't forget to clean up your house before you leave. When you get back, you won't want to do that extra cleaning.
8Pack for your trip at least two days in advance. Even before you pack, you should create a list of items you want to bring with you. When you pack, have that list with you. It will make the packing faster and easier.
