How to Repair a Sky Light Leak on a Travel Trailer With a Rubber Roof

Repairing a leaky sky light on your RV is an easy task if the leak is caught early. Most travel trailers are constructed on a wood frame, and a leak will cause extensive damage if left unrepaired. Inspecting the roof and sky light seams on an annual basis will prevent damage from occurring. Rubber roofing requires special attention as dirt and debris can cause it to quickly deteriorate.

Instructions

    1

Climb up on a ladder to access the roof of the travel trailer. Visually inspect the area around the skylight for signs of cracking and decayed caulk and roofing material.

    2

Use a plastic scraper to clear away any rubber coating and caulking that is hard or brittle. Use a stiff brush (not wire) to clear away any debris.

    3

Use alcohol wipes to clean the area around the skylight. Removing all dirt will ensure that the caulk will hold.

    4

Place a tube of silicon caulk into a caulk gun. Use clear silicon or a color that matches the roof. Puncture the opening on the caulk tube. Squeeze the trigger to remove air and prepare the gun for use.

    5

Place the nozzle of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle to the area where the sky light meets the travel trailer roof. Gently squeeze the trigger of the caulk gun and apply even pressure, drawing an even bead of caulk along the entire edge of the sky light.

    6

Wipe up any excess caulk immediately. Allow the caulk to cure for 24 hours.

    7

Coat the area around the sky light with rubber roof coating using a paintbrush or plastic scraper. Consult the user's manual for your travel trailer for the correct type of rubber coating to use.
