How to Travel from Barcelona to Sitges

Sitges is a one of the jewels of the Mediterranean. A small fishing village located just 20km (12 miles) southwest of Barcelona, it is a scenic town along the costa brava. Sitges was once one of the most important fishing villages on the east coast of Spain. With long beaches, clear waters, a deep history and a newly populated urban center, Sitges has become an important tourist destination. Its unique bay is shielded from the mediterranean. This feature creates a sort of micro-climate that allows Sitges to remain significantly warmer than even Barcelona, only 20km north.

Whether you're traveling straight to Sitges after arriving at Barcelona's Aeroport del Prat or taking a day trip during your stay in Barcelona, you have four travel options. Though the train is arguably the best option, Sitges is also easily accessible by bus, taxi and rental car.

By Train from the Airport: After arriving at the airport and gathering your baggage, follow the signs to the Train Station. There is a long moving walkway that operates between the two stations or you can walk on the path under it that also goes directly to the station. You can get on any o the trains that stops here, but be ready to get off the train at the very next stop, which is El Pratt de Llobregat station. From here catch the train "Vilanova G" toward Sitges. Watch the lighted signs above the train exit doors for "Sitges". It will take about 20 minutes from El Pratt de Llobregat.

By Train from Barcelona: You can catch the train toward Sitges at Sants Station or Passeig de Gracia.

By Bus from the Airport: Catching a bus directly from the airport is very simple. Take the 'Mon Bus', which can be found between terminals A and B. This bus will take you to Sitges (you won't need to change anywhere) and travel time is between 30 and 45 minutes depending on traffic. The following timetables are approximate: Monday to Friday: Every hour from 07:40 to 22:40. Saturdays: Every 2 hours. 08:40, 10:40, 13:40, 15:40, 18:40, 20:40, 22:40. Sundays and Holidays: Every 4 hours. 9:40h, 13:40h, 17:40h, 21:40h.

By Bus from Barcelona Center: Barcelona is littered with buses, so be sure you are getting on the correct bus. Take the N30. You can catch the N30 from Ronda Universitat or Gran Via. The N30 leaves every hour on the hour until 4am.

By Taxi from the Airport: A taxi to Sitges is the most expensive option. It will cost about EUR 60 ($90). You can easily catch a taxi once you exit the baggage claim. You can try telling your taxi driver your destination, but it will be easier for both of you if you have your exact destination (hotel address, etc.) written clearly on a sheet of paper. Hand this to your driver before you depart toward Sitges.

By Taxi from Barcelona Center: You can hail a taxi from just about anywhere in Barcelona, but it will be easier to find one in the center like Plaza Cataluyna. Hand the driver a sheet of paper with the exact address of your destination. The average cost from Barcelona to Sitges is going to cost you between EUR 60 and 80. Ask the driver in advance for a quote so you don't get scammed.

If you'd prefer to brave the Spanish motorway on your own, you can rent a car from the airport. There are two routes toward Sitges and you can take either one without consequence. The "AutoPista" or "Por La Costa", the Motorway or the cost road. The coast road is a more scenic drive, but will take about twice as long (40 minutes). The alternative route will take about 20 minutes. It's an easy and self explanatory route, but be prepared by printing out directions before you arrive. Make sure to have change for any toll roads you stumble upon.
