Traveling with a newborn can be quite challenging. While it may be best not to travel with a newborn at all, circumstances sometimes require it. Train travel may take longer than air travel, but it has several advantages. A train offers more opportunity to move around; if you can secure a sleeper car, you will have more privacy. If you have to travel with your newborn by train, a little planning beforehand can help to make your trip less stressful.
Instructions
- 1
Book your travel during the time of day in which your baby has the longest stretch of sleep. Newborns don't always sleep for long periods of time, so try to pick a time of day when your baby will sleep for a good portion of the trip. Even if it is not his normal nap time, the movement of the train might lull him to sleep.
2Take your baby's car seat on the train. Although trains do not have seat belts to strap it in, the car seat is still the safest way for her to travel. It also gives her a secure place to sit and sleep during the trip and moving around the train will be easier for you with her in the car seat as opposed to being held in your arms.
3Rent a sleeper car, if available. Sleeper cars offer privacy, more room and it will keep you isolated from other passengers, which can be helpful if your newborn is fussy and crying. If a sleeper car is not available, request seats in the front row of the train car which have a little more leg room.
4Pay for a seat for your baby if a sleeper car is not available. Although children under 2 years old usually ride free, they are required to ride on your lap. If the train is fully booked, you will not be comfortable holding your baby for an entire train ride, even a short one. The expense of a seat is well worth the benefit of having a designated seat for your baby.
5Pack everything your baby will need during the trip and take it with you on the train. Essentials such as bottles, diapers, medication, a blanket and clothing should be accessible, not checked with your baggage. Include clothing appropriate for the climate at your destination as well. Pack a few extras of each item in case of delays or schedule changes.
6Bring along a few items to entertain your newborn. A wide selection of toys are available that clip on to the car seat. Bring a few along and change them every so often.
7Ask to board the train early so that you can get yourself and your baby settled into your seats before the other passengers board the train.
8Check the stroller with an attendant. You might want to use it if the train makes several stops. Taking a walk is a good change of pace and a way to get some fresh air.
