How to Become a Travel Agent for Free

Becoming a travel agent is a dream job for many. You make people's vacation dreams come true, you get to travel yourself, and every workday brings a new destination and a new challenge. But how do you land such a position? The most common route is by taking a travel agent training course, but there are other ways of becoming a travel agent that don't cost a dime.

Instructions

    1

Apprentice. A successful travel agent needs to have a unique skill set. He needs to be able to do many things at the same time -- be personable to clients and vendors, be able to keep the myriad of details involved in a typical vacation under control and be able to handle the stress if a client is dissatisfied or if a problem arises. Understandably, travel agency owners are less likely to hire an unproven staff member. Travel knowledge can be taught; the right personality cannot. Prove to the owner that you can be a valuable member of her team by offering to work at a reduced wage for a set time so he can access your skills.

    2

Cold call. Many travel agencies need staff, but are too busy to advertise and interview candidates. This is especially true during the traditionally high-volume months of January, February and March. Make it easy for the agency owner by calling and offering your services.

    3

Volunteer. Most agencies could use someone to file paperwork and travel documents, answer the phone, prepare mailings and help with a host of other functions. Call your favorite agency and offer to work for free. When they see how valuable you are, they might just offer you a paying position.
