Train is the classic way to travel in Europe and still one of the most efficient and comfortable means of transportation. The German railway system is one of the most advanced in the world. Book tickets from Hungary and enjoy a traveler's pastime.

Instructions

Prepare to Travel From Hungary to Germany

    1

Pack your passport in a safe but accessible spot. U.S. citizens will need a passport to enter Germany and may stay up to 90 days in the country for tourism without a visa.

    2

Choose a destination and route. A few trains per day leave Budapest to travel to Berlin via Prague and Bratislava. A few more connect Budapest and Munich via Vienna. Both routes are very popular.

    3

Carry Hungarian currency. Only forints will be accepted at Hungarian train stations. The trip to Munich will cost around 6,000 forints, and a trip to Berlin will cost around 10,000 forints.

    4

Look up the train schedules at a local station or the railway's Web site, Elvira (see Resources). The trip from Budapest to Munich will take around 8 hours; it runs about 3 times a day. The Budapest-to-Berlin trip will take around 14 hours; it runs about 4 times a day.

    5

Choose between first class and second class. The trip to Germany is long, especially to Berlin, and paying the little extra for first-class is recommended to travelers. If you are not an easy sleeper, first-class is highly recommended.

    6

Go to one of Budapest's train stations and find a ticketing agent, or go to Budapest's central ticket office and talk to someone there. Order your ticket as clearly as possible.

    7

Consider a rail pass. If you plan on taking any more trains within Germany or elsewhere in Central or Eastern Europe, check out what Rail Europe has to offer at their Web site. Be aware that you have to book any passes at least 7 days prior to departure from North America.
