Whether you're preparing for a trip around the world or just a flight across your state, its easy to overestimate how much to pack for a flight. Once you add up clothing for each day of your trip, two or three pairs of shoes, accessories and toiletries, your suitcase may be overflowing. With many airlines charging fees to check luggage, it's a sound idea to pack lightly and bring mix-and-match items to reduce the amount of bags you need to bring.

Create a packing list by writing down everything you think you need for your trip. Stick to the list and check off everything as you add it to your suitcase. Websites like onebag.org and the Universal Packing List have packing lists you can print.
2Determine the weather for the destination you're visiting to help you choose the appropriate clothing. Fodor's recommends sticking to the predicted weather; don't pack sweaters and pants in case it's cold if you're traveling to the Bahamas where the temps will be in the 90s. A general rule is to bring one outfit per day of your trip, but you can wear bottoms such as jeans two or three times and pair them with a fresh top.
3Choose mix-and-match clothing in the same color palette and one or two pairs of shoes that will match all of your outfits. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane; same goes for clothing. If you need a coat, bring it on the plane instead of packing it in your bag. Bring one pair of underwear for each day of the trip and socks if needed. Stuff socks inside shoes.
4Avoid packing full-size toiletries and bring travel-size items such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush. If you plan to stay with loved ones or in hotels, leave your hairdryer, iron, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and shower gel at home. Pack prescription medications in your carry-on bag.
5Gather travel documents such as tickets, confirmations, passports and other identification and keep them close by, ideally in a purse or other carry-on bag. Include a book or magazine, MP3 player or other entertainment and one change of clothes (in case checked luggage is lost) in your carry-on.
