Travel trailers usually have two pressurized water systems: one connected to an external city water supply and pressurized by the grid, and one served by an internal water tank and pressurized by a 12-volt water pump. Both systems must be joined so that the travel trailers' sinks, showers and toilets are served regardless of the water source. The two systems also must be separated so that city water cannot back-flow into the internal water tank.
Instructions
- 1
Place the 12-volt water pump close to the fresh water tank, and attach it with drive screws through the tabs on either side. Wire the pump according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2Run a 3/8-inch or -inch pipe from the city water inlet to the location of the pump. The diameter is determined by the nipples on the pump, the city water inlet and the tank. Use black ABS pipe, rather than white PVC as used in residences. Black pipe is more resistant to concussion and temperature change.
3Run a 3/8-inch or -inch pipe from the outlet of the fresh water tank to the location of the pump.
4Make a pipe connection from the outlet of the tank to the inlet of the pump, then from the outlet of the pump to a "T"-fitting. If the water pump is not equipped with an integral non-return valve -- often called a check valve -- to prevent city water from back-flowing into the storage tank, one must be inserted in the system between the "T"-fitting and the pump.
5Connect the pipe from the city water hook-up to the second leg of the "T"-fitting. Connect the third leg of the "T"-fitting to the system of pipes serving the cold water taps at the sinks and shower, to the toilet and to the upstream side of the water heater. Make all connections in the system watertight using hose clamps, and secure runs of pipe with plastic cable ties, so they are not susceptible to accidental damage.
6Run a pipe from the lowest point of the system to a lower point outside the vehicle, and terminate it in a stopcock. This spur is used to drain the system, for example when winterizing.
7Pressurize the system using first the city water hook-up and then the pumped tank supply. Inspect every joint and pipe run for leaks.
